8 Months after ACL surgery

Well, its been about 5 weeks since I last reported on my ACL surgery recovery process. All seems to be going well. I did take a break from training over the Christmas holidays which I think helped my Jumpers Knee a lot.

I have started up some running again. I ran about 3 km straight the other day without any breaks and I am happy to report that was not that much discomfort at all in my patella during the running or the next day. Today I managed to do some sprinting on a treadmill with no ill effects either.

So the plan from here on in is to continue with some quad, hip and hamstring exercises that I've outlined throughout the past 8 months.

For those of you new to my blog, be sure to check out the Blog Archive on the menu portion of the screen. Hopefully it will help people out. I will try to report back from time to time on any new activities I try and how my knee feels afterwards. I do have a 5km race planned for March 2009 so I will work towards getting in shape for that.

  1. This is a great blog. Super informative and has given me a lot more confidence. My sugery is this Friday and my nerves are fried worrying, not about the surgery but the recovery.
Thanks and keep up the rehab.

  3. Superb blog. I had mine done at the end of February 2008. Progress has been good and was doing 8.5 mile runs by about 5 months plus all the physio work, plus gym and strengthening.

I played some 5 a side soccer at about 6+ months though I was and still am petrified of sideways or twisting movements. I played again in November and hurt my knee again.

When I landed I felt pain in my knee. There was nothing special about the landing. Just that something 'went' in the knee. Actually the inside of the knee to the side of the knee cap (I had a hamstring graft by the way). My physio thinks I've torn some cartilage.

Two months later and now my knee does not hurt as much but there is still a bit of pain. It just feels weak. The knee often makes a loud click and when I squad down and stand up, the knee makes crackling noises which the physio says there is nothing to worry about.

I just don't think it will ever get back to the point I can play football again - physically and mentally.

How does your knee feel? Do you have any pains?

  4. Right now i dont have any pain. sometimes after a jog, it swells a bit. I have not gone back to sports yet. The mental part is the hardest part to get over in the end. Its possible you just have torn cartilage. Is getting an MRI an option to confirm?

  5. MRI scans are not the kind of thing that National Health Service (UK) offers unless in an exceptional case. The physio reckons I should just get on with it and hopefully it will settle down (it has settled down but slowly - hope it doesn't stop at this point).

It does indeed seem to be the cartilage and if it really bothers me I can see the surgeon again and possibly have this taken out. The question is, I've had some meniscus taken off already. Do I really want to take out more? It's just going to accelerate arthritis if I do.

  9. I injured my knee while skiing in February. Was referred to a Consultant that specialises in sports injury (on the NHS) by my GP at the beginning of March. Saw Consultant at the end of March and she reckons I've torn my medial meniscus and damaged ACL. Put me forward for priority MRI (on NHS) which I've now done. Now waiting to hear from Consultant...the NHS does work (at least my local trust does)

  11. Any ideas as to why I feel a huge Knot at the base of my quad? I'm able to flex to 105, less than two weeks after surgery, but one degree more is extremely painful. The tightness at that spot is preventing any further progress. Was able to straighten to less than one degree five days after surgery. No other injuries other than ACL, hamstring graft.

  12. I tore my ACL in January. I had my surgery in Febuary (petella tendon) it's been 10 months now and i played basketball for the first time since tearing the acl. I did wear my brace. But while playing i sorta tweaked my knee, its been soar and been getting sharp pains if i turn my knee a certain angle. Do you think rest will solve the problem...im walking fine, feel absolutly no pain while walking ...just when i twist my knee a certain angle

But, it's so hard, I do feel like I dont have my life anymore...today the guy that helps me with the rehab, told me that I dont have enough bending in my knee....! I do exercise 2 times daily....what else should I do???
